 In the summer we aren't stuck indoors because of weather. In fact, pleasant weather brings us outdoors. This lack of clustering people keeps germs away rather than recirculating them around the home or building.
Unless you live in an area that does year round schooling summer is also the time when children aren't around each other, sharing whatever virus or bacteria is available. Trust me, having a toddler in preschool has reminded me once again that children can be a joy but are also often walking germ machines.

Not the Hand: It's actually logical. Unless we stand next to a sink or carry hand sanitizer gel covering our mouth with our hands is a bad idea. "Cough, cough, nice to meet you Mr. Jones." I'm not going to want to shake his hand, are you?
The Elbow: This is logical for many reasons. We aren't spreading germs by coughing and then shaking someone's hand, opening a door or touching any common surface. We don't use our elbows that way. On top of that, if both hands are full, the elbow may be the only location available.

How Not to Treat the Sick

"It's just a cold." Maybe and maybe not. Other illnesses look like a cold and get treated like one. Even if is a cold the word "just" in front of it is not always accurate. If our 89 year old elder catches it, the malady can go from a cold to a memorial service rather rapidly.

"You're young, you'll get over it." In some cases age has nothing to do with the severity of an illness. Children still die from curable (and preventable) illnesses. On top of that, who decides when I'm too old to get over it? I'm I still too young at 52?
